Abia House Of Rep Member Apologises For Assaulting Uber Driver.

In his apology, Ikwechegh stated, As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry. He expressed regret for the distress and embarrassment caused to the driver, Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the public.

Ikwechegh confirmed his cooperation with the Nigerian Police, assuring that he is committed to accountability. I want to assure the public that I am fully cooperating with the Nigerian Police investigation into this matter. I support their efforts to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible are held accountable, he stated.

The lawmaker also commended the swift action by the police and his political party, emphasizing a collective commitment to uphold the law and protect citizens’ rights. He disclosed that he is taking immediate steps to address the factors that led to his behaviour, including seeking professional counseling to prevent similar actions in the future. Additionally, Ikwechegh plans to engage in community service initiatives that promote respect, empathy, and understanding.

He called on Nigerians to join him in fostering a culture of respect and tolerance, saying, We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Thank you for your understanding, and I hope you will join me on this journey towards healing and growth.

The incident, which quickly went viral on social media, showed a visibly angry Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping and verbally abusing the driver, allegedly because the driver asked him to come out to collect a delivery. Ikwechegh was also heard threatening to make the driver disappear  without consequence.

The video sparked public outrage, leading to a police invitation for Ikwechegh at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters. Police officials further criticized the lawmaker for attempting to bring the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, into the dispute, by challenging the driver to call him for intervention after the incident.
