The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has dissolved the executive of the Itsekiri National Youth Council (INYC), citing the group’s failure to adopt a new constitution.
Palace sources expressed concern over the selection process for INYC executives, which reportedly, for nearly 30 years, involved appointing individuals loyal to certain leaders rather than through formal elections.
During a widely attended Itsekiri Youths Assembly held in Warri on Monday, the Olu of Warri announced the dissolution of the INYC executive. This action, he stated, is intended to clear the way for the formation of a committee to draft a new constitution and organize fresh elections.

The statement from the palace highlighted that the INYC executive was dissolved due to its inability to implement a new constitution or organize elections to appoint new leadership at both national and chapter levels.

In the interim, the palace has designated the Presidents of the National Association of Itsekiri Graduates and the National Association of Itsekiri Students (NAIS) as members of a committee to draft the new INYC constitution. Chief Omolubi Newuwumi and Chief Wilson Olley have been appointed as advisers to the committee.
The committee is expected to complete its assignment by the end of January 2025, at which point a new executive council for the INYC will be elected. Additionally, the Warri monarch has decreed that individuals over the age of 40 are no longer eligible to hold youth positions within the Warri Kingdom.
