Wike Blames Fubara’s Political Crisis on Self-Inflicted Injury

ABUJA: The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the political challenges facing Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as a self-inflicted injury.

Wike revealed that he had previously met with the embattled governor alongside key political figures, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, and former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to counsel Fubara, advice which the governor reportedly ignored. Indeed, this is a self-inflicted injury. He does not need it, Wike said.

When this issue started, I called him. Seyi Makinde was there, Ortom was there, Ikpeazu was there, Ugwuanyi was there. We sat him down and told him, ‘This path is not good for you. God has given you this opportunity; be humble. Don’t let people push you.

They’re telling him to act like a governor, we understand that. No one is disputing that he’s the governor. But we advised him not to abandon those who worked tirelessly to help him get there

Wike also addressed concerns surrounding open grazing within the Federal Capital Territory, acknowledging the frustration it causes residents while emphasizing the need for careful handling of the issue.

The truth is, no one is happy about it, Wike said. Governance isn’t like managing a private business; you must tread carefully, and that’s what we’re doing.

For instance, before I assumed office, a grazing reserve of about 100 hectares had already been allocated. But if I told you the kind of resistance we’re facing now, land grabbers have encroached massively.

It’s a difficult situation, but we are determined to resolve it, even if we must proceed cautiously.
