The management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has suspended two students over allegations that they cyberbullied the institution’s suspended Students’ Union Government (SUG) president, James Iyanuoluwa Adio, by circulating his private affairs online.
The university announced the development in a statement published on its official news portal on Friday. The statement was signed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Tajudeen Opoola, who is currently serving as the Acting Vice-Chancellor.
According to the institution, the affected students, Alao Iyanuoluwa Odunayo and Olawale Abiodun Samuel, allegedly conspired to expose Adio’s private matters on social media after he failed to meet their financial demands.
FUOYE said it strongly condemned the alleged actions, describing them as conduct capable of tarnishing the image and reputation of the institution.
“The university frowns on any behaviour capable of bringing its name into disrepute,” the statement noted.
Although investigations into the incident are still ongoing, the management directed the two students to proceed on immediate suspension, stressing its determination to rid the institution of acts that could damage its integrity.
The latest disciplinary action comes barely a week after the university suspended Adio and the Deputy Director of Students Affairs over allegations of extortion.
Adio was accused of being indirectly involved in the unlawful collection of ₦1,000 from newly admitted students for practical sessions, with investigators reportedly tracing about ₦700,000 to his personal bank account.
His suspension sparked further controversy after an explicit video allegedly involving him surfaced online and quickly went viral across social media platforms.
The leaked video attracted widespread reactions and prompted the intervention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), which subsequently engaged the university management over the suspension of the SUG president.
FUOYE has maintained that investigations into both the extortion allegations and the cyberbullying claims are ongoing, assuring that appropriate actions will be taken based on the outcome.
The incident has generated intense debate within the university community and beyond, raising concerns over privacy violations, cyberbullying and ethical conduct among students in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
