The Federal Government has issued a fresh warning to telecommunications companies over worsening network failures across Nigeria, insisting that subscribers deserve better service and value for the money they spend on calls and data.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said telecom operators including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom and T2 must urgently resolve persistent network challenges affecting millions of Nigerians.
According to the minister, the government has already implemented major reforms aimed at stabilising the telecom industry, adding that operators can no longer blame poor infrastructure and economic conditions for weak service delivery.
Tijani explained that years of underinvestment in critical telecom infrastructure contributed to poor connectivity and unstable internet services across the country. To address the problem, he said the government has secured support from the World Bank under Project BRIDGE to expand nationwide fibre-optic infrastructure.
He also revealed that new fibre deployment projects, additional telecom towers under NUCAP and expanded satellite connectivity would begin before the end of the year. According to him, the investments are expected to improve internet reliability and network coverage within the next two to five years.
The minister further disclosed that the Nigerian Communications Commission has been empowered to monitor telecom operators closely, enforce compliance and sanction companies that fail to improve service quality.
Tijani maintained that Nigerians should soon begin to experience clearer calls, stronger data connections and more reliable internet access nationwide.
