The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has announced 13 candidates for the House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several close allies of former governor Nyesom Wike securing tickets in the party’s primaries.
The primaries were conducted on Saturday across the 23 local government areas of the state, with candidates emerging from various federal constituencies. The results were announced at the party secretariat in Port Harcourt by Wahab Owokoniran, who chaired the exercise.
Owokoniran said the 13 aspirants emerged after fulfilling the requirements of the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines. He noted that while some constituencies had only one aspirant, others witnessed contests between two contenders.
He commended party members for the peaceful conduct of the exercise, expressing surprise that the primaries were free of violence despite concerns about unrest in the state.
The winners include Martin Amaewhule for Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency, Precious Igwe for Port Harcourt I, and Blessing Amadi for Port Harcourt II.
Others are incumbent lawmaker Dumnamene Dekor for Gokana/Khana, Felix Nwaeke for Eleme/Tai/Oyigbo, Isobo Solomon for Akuku-Toru/Asari-Toru, and Linda Somiari-Steward for Okrika/Ogu/Bolo.
Also elected were federal lawmakers Solomon Bob for Obua/Odual/Ahoada East and Victor Obuzor for Ahoada West/Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni.
The list also includes Frederick Apiafi for Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro, Ozuzum Nwamaka for Etche/Omuma, Cyril Hart for Bonny/Degema, and Onyeozu Joy Nyebuchi for Ikwerre/Emohua.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, including the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Johnson Sinikiem, were present during the announcement.
The exercise followed the earlier disqualification of four aspirants reportedly linked to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, including serving lawmakers Awaji-Inombek Abiante and Boma Goodhead.
