ABUJA: FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has denied reports that he is lobbying to become Director-General of the All-Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike said he does not need a position in the campaign structure to help President Bola Tinubu secure re-election, stressing that his support for the President is not tied to any political appointment.
The former Rivers State governor made his position known in a statement issued on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.
The clarification came amid reports linking Wike with the proposed position of Director-General of Tinubu’s 2027 presidential campaign as political parties prepare for the commencement of campaigns on August 19.
Wike said he had neither discussed the leadership of the proposed campaign council nor sought membership of the body.
According to him, his focus is on supporting Tinubu’s re-election while continuing to discharge his responsibilities as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. I do not need to be the DG or even member of the Presidential Campaign Council of Mr President’s political party to contribute my quota by ensuring that he wins handsomely in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike said.
The minister’s comments come against the backdrop of his unusual political position. Although he remains a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, Wike has been serving in the APC-led Federal Government and has openly declared his support for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
His continued backing of the President has generated speculation over whether he could eventually play a formal role in the APC’s campaign organization.
However, Wike maintained that he was not seeking any campaign position and said his immediate priority was to deliver on his responsibilities in the FCT.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to the implementation of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, suggesting that his contribution to the President’s re-election effort would not necessarily require a formal role in the campaign council.
The minister has repeatedly maintained that Tinubu deserves another term in office, despite his continued membership of the PDP.
His political alignment with Tinubu has remained a major talking point within the opposition party, particularly as the 2027 elections draw closer.
For now, Wike appears to be distancing himself from the reported campaign DG race, insisting that he can play a significant role in helping Tinubu win without occupying any official position in the President’s campaign structure.
