WASHINGTON: With the illuminated White House behind her, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris made a direct appeal to undecided voters on Tuesday night to “turn the page” on Donald Trump, referencing the need for change and signaling a new chapter for the Ellipse, where Trump’s Jan. 6 speech once spurred chaos at the Capitol.
In her speech, Harris shared her vision for a presidency rooted in optimism and progress, contrasting it with Trump’s legacy of division.
For too long, America has been consumed by chaos, division, and distrust,” Harris said. But it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s time to stop pointing fingers and start locking arms. Let’s turn the page on the drama, the fear, and the conflict.

Harris addressed a crowd that her campaign estimated at 75,000, saying, It’s time for a new generation of leadership in America. And I am ready to offer that leadership. With just one week until Election Day on Nov. 5.
Harris and Trump are making last-minute appeals to voters in a tightly contested race, holding large-scale rallies in an effort to reach undecided and disengaged Americans.
As Trump continued to focus on issues like inflation, blaming Harris for high prices and criticizing the Biden administration’s immigration policies, Harris countered his message, pledging to bring a new direction to the White House.
We know who Donald Trump is,” she said. “He’s the person who stood here almost four years ago, inciting an armed mob to storm the Capitol to overturn a free and fair election, a loss he knew he couldn’t accept.
In her proposed agenda, Harris has been specific about targeting cost reduction, promising policies such as a federal ban on price gouging, caps on insulin costs, and assistance for first-time home buyers.

Her speech addressed voters watching from home who might still be undecided, and she made clear her commitment to moving the country forward.
Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign issued a statement criticizing Harris’ speech as “dark, angry, and negative, stating that “while Kamala peddles division, President Trump is focusing on what matters to Americans fixing the economy, securing the border, and restoring America’s strength.
This criticism comes as both sides engage in heated exchanges, competing to present their contrasting visions to the American people.
In a statement earlier on Tuesday, President Joe Biden denounced a racist joke about Puerto Rico made by a comedian at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally, calling the remarks “garbage” and “un-American.
Biden’s remarks drew backlash from Trump and his supporters, with the former president likening Biden’s words to Hillary Clinton’s deplorables comment from 2016, which Trump said alienated voters.
As Harris supporters gathered along 15th Street in Washington, D.C., to enter the Ellipse, a spirited atmosphere emerged, with vendors selling campaign merchandise, music filling the air, and attendees showing support with Vote and “Black Lives Matter” apparel.
Many attendees wore Converse shoes as a nod to Harris’ signature look, while songs by Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lopez—both of whom have endorsed Harris—played in the background.

Among the supporters was Daraja Carroll, a 28-year-old attorney from California, who expressed her deep connection to Harris’ campaign. As a Black woman attorney and a descendant of enslaved people, I couldn’t sit on my couch today,” Carroll said.
There are so many reasons why I came to support her. Carroll spoke of reclaiming spaces like the Ellipse, a sentiment shared by many attendees, especially as Harris delivered her message from a location that had once been the backdrop for division.
For some, like veteran Tosha Taylor of Maryland, Harris’ rally represented a clear contrast from Trump’s Jan. 6 rally.
This event is about solidarity, love for country, and real patriotism, Taylor said. The difference is stark: one is filled with joy, the other with anger and chaos.
Suzy Wagner from Arlington, Virginia, echoed similar sentiments, noting that Harris message resonated with Americans exhausted by Trump’s divisive rhetoric.
We’re just over it, Wagner said. Harris’s message is what we need now a focus on unity and a commitment to getting things done.
As Election Day nears, Harris continues to position herself as a voice for change, appealing to Americans who want to move forward from a time of turmoil and division. With her promise of fresh leadership, Harris is asking voters to “turn the page” on the past and look toward a new future for the United States.
