The death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, remains one of the most controversial stories to emerge from Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Three years after his death, questions surrounding what happened in his final hours continue to generate public debate, with social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), revisiting aspects of the case and drawing renewed attention to questions that have continued to trouble Nigerians.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27.

At the centre of the initial controversy was a short video circulated shortly after his death.
The video lasted only a few seconds and showed Mohbad’s lifeless body lying across someone’s lap.

His wife, Wunmi; his younger brother, Adura Aloba; and other individuals associated with the singer became subjects of intense public discussion.

The subsequent investigation would have to determine whether there was evidence linking any individual to the circumstances of Mohbad’s death.
The situation became more complicated when reports indicated that Naira Marley was outside Nigeria when Mohbad died.
The focus then began shifting towards the medical circumstances surrounding the singer’s final hours.
A major development in the case was the revelation that Mohbad had received injections shortly before his death.
Auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe became a central figure in the investigation after being identified as the person who administered treatment to Mohbad.
According to reports of the police investigation, the nurse administered three injections and Mohbad subsequently experienced adverse symptoms before his death.
The medical circumstances became one of the key issues examined by investigators.
The question was no longer simply who had previously quarrelled with Mohbad.
Investigators also had to determine what medication was administered, whether it was appropriate, whether the treatment caused an adverse reaction and whether that reaction contributed to his death.
As public anger intensified, the authorities exhumed Mohbad’s body for forensic examination.
The development came after widespread calls for an investigation into his death.
The Lagos State Government also established a coroner’s inquest to examine the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
The proceedings provided an opportunity for witnesses and other relevant persons to give evidence under a formal process rather than relying solely on social-media claims.
The case subsequently moved through several stages involving the police, the courts and the coroner.
Naira Marley and Sammy Larry were among the individuals whose names became heavily associated with the public controversy.
They were arrested during the early stages of the investigation and became central figures in the national debate.
However, the legal proceedings did not establish them as responsible for Mohbad’s death.
They were eventually cleared through prosecutorial legal advice in the criminal proceedings connected to the case.
Naira Marley also appeared before the coroner and denied allegations of threatening or assaulting Mohbad.

One of the most significant developments came in July 2025.
The coroner’s inquest reportedly ruled out homicide or foul play in Mohbad’s death and recommended the prosecution of the nurse who treated him.
