Lagos: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a strong warning to state governors, declaring that any illegal approvals granted for building setbacks along federal highways will be revoked by the Federal Government.
The President made this announcement during the commissioning of the access road to the Lekki Deep Sea Port in Lagos. His remarks follow an earlier warning issued during the phase one inauguration of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, where he cautioned developers against building on restricted zones along the highway.
Speaking directly to government officials at the event, including the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Tinubu stated: Take it that we will revoke all those approvals, even those already granted on federal highway setbacks. We are serious about enforcing this.
No more approvals for illegally created islands or unapproved developments.
President Tinubu emphasized the need for coordination between state governments, the Surveyor General of the Federation, and the Federal Ministry of Works to ensure proper planning for infrastructure development.
I’ve directed the Minister of Works to partner with the Surveyor General and governors to secure adequate setbacks for future road expansion and public infrastructure,” Tinubu said.
He appealed to governors not to issue planning permits without federal input, stressing that misaligned developments undermine national infrastructure projects. Governors in attendance included those of Kaduna, Abia, Enugu, and Borno, as well as the Deputy Governor of Lagos State.
