Tension has gripped Ipo community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State following the mysterious disappearance of a local vigilante commander after a violent confrontation with suspected armed bandits operating in nearby forests.
The missing man, identified as Ohahuru, was reportedly leading members of the Ipo Security Planning and Advisory Committee (ISPAC) during a joint operation aimed at flushing out armed men believed to be terrorizing farmlands and forest routes in the area.

The farmers reportedly encountered unidentified men carrying sophisticated weapons while working on their farms, prompting immediate security concerns.
One resident familiar with the development explained that intelligence gathered by the community led to a coordinated search effort.
On Saturday, some farmers reported seeing strange people with guns inside the bush. Because of that, vigilante members, alongside some police officers, went into the bush to track them, the source said.
The search operation reportedly escalated into a deadly exchange when the security team encountered the suspected bandits deep inside the forest.
Witnesses said the armed men opened fire on the vigilante group shortly after contact was made.
The vigilante group got there, and the bandits opened fire on them. They have sophisticated weapons. After the attack, the leader did not return with the team,” another source said.

His whereabouts remain unknown as search efforts continue.
Residents of Ipo community have expressed growing concern that the vigilante leader may have been abducted during the clash.
Although no group has claimed responsibility, suspicions remain high that he may have been taken by the armed attackers.
Community members say the incident has heightened fear across surrounding villages, many of which depend on vigilante patrols for protection due to limited security presence in remote forest areas.

Police spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, said authorities are currently working to verify the details of the incident, including the reported disappearance of the vigilante leader.
Security operatives are also said to be assessing intelligence from the area to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the clash.
The incident adds to growing concerns over increasing criminal activity in forest corridors across parts of Rivers State and neighbouring regions, where armed groups are believed to exploit difficult terrain for concealment.
In recent months, similar encounters between local security outfits and suspected bandits have been reported across the Niger Delta region, raising questions about the capacity of community-based security structures to confront heavily armed groups.
Security experts warn that without stronger coordination between vigilantes and formal security agencies; such operations could continue to result in casualties and disappearances.
