Technical Issue Disrupts Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp Access

On Wednesday evening, frustrated users took to X (formerly Twitter) to report a widespread outage affecting Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The apps, all owned by Meta, were inaccessible globally due to a “technical issue,” leaving millions unable to use the platforms.

Downdetector recorded significant spikes in outage reports, with Instagram seeing 70,000 reports above normal levels and Facebook receiving over 100,000 complaints. Meta acknowledged the issue in an X post, saying, We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to restore normal service as quickly as possible and apologize for the inconvenience.

This disruption follows previous similar outages, such as those in May 2024 and October 2021, which were also attributed to technical issues, rather than security breaches.

During the outage, Facebook users faced login difficulties, even when entering the correct password, while Instagram mobile users experienced issues with their feeds not updating.

Facebook, the world’s largest social media platform, has about 3 billion active monthly users, while Instagram boasts approximately 1.35 billion users.

With the Meta apps down, X saw a surge in activity as users turned to the platform for updates. In Nigeria, where WhatsApp is particularly popular with over 90 million users, the outage caused a notable impact. According to Statista, in 2021, about 33 million Nigerians were active on social media, with 86.2% using Facebook, 73.1% using Instagram, and 61.4% using X.
