The Federal Government has designated and sanctioned several individuals and entities, including prominent separatist leader Simon Ekpa, over alleged involvement in financing terrorism.
The sanctions, announced on Thursday following a Nigeria Sanctions Committee meeting in Abuja, mandate the immediate freezing of all funds, assets, and economic resources linked to the designated persons and organizations.
This decision was made under Section 54 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, with approval from the Attorney-General of the Federation and the President.
Government documents reveal that financial institutions have been directed to identify and freeze all accounts associated with the listed individuals and entities without prior notice.
The sanctions apply to:
- Funds, assets, and economic resources owned or controlled by the designated persons and entities.
- Assets that are jointly owned, indirectly controlled, or derived from their activities.
- Financial institutions must file Suspicious Transactions Reports (STRs) with the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) for further investigation.

The government emphasized that freezing measures extend beyond individual accounts to include those associated with signatories and directors of the designated persons and entities.Financial institutions must:
- Report any assets frozen or actions taken in compliance with the sanctions.
- File Suspicious Transactions Reports (STRs) to the NFIU for further financial analysis.
- Ensure that freezing obligations cover all funds and assets controlled directly or indirectly by the designated individuals and entities, including those derived from their financial activities.
