ABUJA: The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has introduced a new self-service fuel system that allows motorists to purchase petrol and dispense it themselves at selected NNPC Retail stations using a mobile application.
The initiative is part of NNPC Retail’s plan to introduce between 50 and 70 smart self-service filling stations across Nigeria within the next six months, marking a shift from the traditional model where fuel attendants handle the dispensing process.
Under the new system, motorists can select the amount of fuel they want, make payment through the app and receive a code that activates the pump.
NNPC Retail has provided motorists with a step-by-step guide on how to use the new service at participating stations.
Motorists intending to use the self-service facility must first download the NRL Fuel App.
The download link is available through the NNPC Retail social media channel, according to the guide issued by the company.
After installing and opening the application, select “Fuel Purchase” and choose the type of fuel required.
The app provides a list of available NNPC Retail stations.
Motorists should identify stations offering the self-service facility by looking for the green “Self-Serve” badge displayed next to the station name.
The service is currently available only at selected locations as NNPC continues its nationwide rollout.
After selecting a participating station, enter the amount you wish to spend on petrol.
The application will display the corresponding fuel quantity and price. Once the details have been reviewed, tap “Pay from Wallet” to complete the transaction.
Once payment has been successfully processed, the app generates a digital receipt.
The receipt contains important details, including the Order ID, Self-Service Code and QR Code.
At the fuel pump, enter the eight-digit self-service code generated by the application on the terminal and press the hash key.
After the code is validated, pick up the nozzle and begin dispensing fuel.
The system is designed to dispense the exact quantity corresponding to the amount paid for through the app.
NNPC’s self-service initiative is part of a broader plan to transform conventional filling stations into modern energy and mobility centres.
NNPC Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, said the new model was designed as part of the company’s effort to transform traditional filling stations into wider energy and mobility hubs.
At the newly commissioned smart station on Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, Abuja, NNPC Retail Executive Director, Retail Operations and Mobility, Shettima Baba-Kukawa, said motorists could complete transactions from their phones and dispense precisely the amount of fuel they had purchased.
The planned smart stations will not be limited to petrol sales.
According to NNPC, the facilities are expected to combine conventional fuel retailing with additional energy and mobility services, including electric vehicle charging, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG).
The development represents NNPC Retail’s broader move toward technology-driven filling stations capable of providing multiple energy services to motorists.
For now, motorists cannot use the self-service system at every NNPC station.
The facility is being introduced gradually, meaning customers must check the NRL Fuel App for stations carrying the Self-Serve designation before attempting to use the system.
The model also means motorists will need access to the mobile application and sufficient funds in their app wallet to complete purchases.
As the rollout expands, the system could reduce motorists’ dependence on fuel attendants for dispensing and provide a more technology-driven way of buying petrol at NNPC Retail stations.
