Nnamdi Kanu’s Release Not A Condition For South-East Support In 2027 – Umahi

ABUJA: Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has stated that the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is not a precondition for the South-East to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking with journalists in Lagos on Friday, Umahi dismissed reports suggesting that the South-East had issued demands including Kanu’s release in exchange for political backing. Kanu’s case is not a condition for our support.

We are open to negotiating his release, but no one should politicize it. The President didn’t incarcerate him,” Umahi said.

He described Tinubu as a “listening leader” and expressed optimism that Kanu’s release could come through dialogue and divine intervention, not political pressure. President Tinubu may not be perfect, but he’s making the right reforms.

The economy is stabilizing, and foreign partners are regaining confidence in Nigeria,” he added.

Umahi highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects in the South-East under Tinubu’s administration, such as long-abandoned federal roads now undergoing reconstruction.

He also dismissed claims of marginalization, arguing that the South-East enjoys better federal inclusion under Tinubu than previous administrations.

Those criticizing the President should first show what they’ve done for the country. The South-East is finally heard at the centre, he said.

On his political future, Umahi ruled out any 2027 presidential ambition, affirming his full loyalty to President Tinubu. won’t run. I’ll work for my boss.

The APC is the only viable platform for the South-East, Umahi declared, adding, “We won’t go back to Egypt.

He called for unity among political leaders in the region, emphasizing that South-East governors regardless of party are cooperating with the federal government for regional development.
