Nigerian Army Detects Foreign Jihadist Threats at Borders, Vows Decisive Action

PORT HARCOURT:  The Nigerian Army has raised fresh concerns over the presence of foreign jihadist elements around the country’s borders, assuring citizens that troops are fully prepared to prevent any attempt to infiltrate or destabilise Nigeria.

Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu disclosed this on Monday during the grand finale of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The event, themed Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army, was attended by President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, alongside top military officers, government officials and foreign defence delegates.

Addressing participants, Shaibu said intelligence reports had revealed the footprints of foreign jihadist groups around Nigeria’s borders, stressing that the Army remains vigilant and capable of neutralising every emerging threat.

“We have already noticed the footprints of foreign jihadists across our borders. However, I want to assure Nigerians that the Nigerian Army is alert, prepared and equal to the task of defending the nation’s territorial integrity,” he said.

He noted that despite the evolving nature of modern security threats, Nigerian troops have continued to demonstrate resilience in ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations across the country.

The Army chief recalled the institution’s rich history, saying Nigerian soldiers had consistently overcome major security challenges, including the World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War and regional peacekeeping missions under ECOMOG.

According to him, today’s Army remains committed to defending the country with professionalism, discipline, courage and selfless service.

Shaibu disclosed that more than 80 percent of Nigerian Army personnel are currently deployed in various theatres of operation nationwide, tackling terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.

He said the Army would continue adapting its strategies and operational tactics to effectively confront emerging security challenges while safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.

Representing President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s military through advanced technology, increased investment and improved local defence production.

According to the President, his administration is prioritising research, innovation and indigenous military manufacturing to improve operational effectiveness and reduce dependence on foreign military equipment.

He described the revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) as a major component of the government’s security agenda, noting that enhanced local production would boost national self-reliance while creating employment opportunities.

“My administration remains committed to countering contemporary security threats through the adoption of emerging technologies, improved operational planning and enhanced combat readiness, the President stated.

Tinubu also welcomed the hosting of the African Land Forces Forum, describing it as an important platform for strengthening defence diplomacy and promoting collaboration among African militaries.

He expressed optimism that the forum would enhance intelligence sharing, improve border security cooperation, build counter-terrorism capacity, strengthen cybersecurity resilience and encourage the use of artificial intelligence in addressing modern security challenges.

The President added that stronger partnerships between governments, defence institutions and the private sector would accelerate the development of Nigeria’s defence industry.

The President praised officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their sacrifices in defending the country against internal and external threats.

He urged personnel to continue serving Nigerians with honour, discipline and professionalism while protecting the rights and dignity of citizens.

Tinubu also paid tribute to fallen military personnel, assuring their families that the nation would continue to honour their sacrifices and support those they left behind.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara congratulated the Nigerian Army on its 163rd anniversary, describing the decision to host the celebration in Port Harcourt as evidence that the state remains peaceful and secure.

He applauded the Army’s professionalism and renewed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies while calling for improved welfare for military personnel.

The ceremony attracted several dignitaries, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Chief of Defence Staff, senior military commanders, government officials and international defence representatives.

The Nigerian Army Day Celebration is held annually to commemorate the Army’s achievements, honour fallen heroes and reinforce its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and ensuring national security amid evolving threats.
