Mbappé Condemns Alleged Racist Remarks by Paraguayan Senator as France Federation Weighs Legal Action

France captain Kylian Mbappé has strongly condemned comments attributed to Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla following France’s narrow victory over Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while French football authorities say they are considering legal action over the incident.

The controversy emerged after France defeated Paraguay 1-0 in their Round of 16 clash in Philadelphia, with Mbappé converting the decisive penalty to send Les Bleus into the quarterfinals.

Following the match, international media outlets reported that Amarilla posted comments on social media targeting Mbappé’s heritage and nationality. The reported remarks drew widespread criticism from football fans, public figures and anti-racism advocates, prompting reactions from both the player and football authorities.

Responding through a statement shared on social media, Mbappé condemned the reported remarks, describing the senator as “a despicable woman unworthy of her position.”

He also defended Paraguay’s national team, saying the senator’s comments overshadowed the country’s impressive World Cup campaign and did not reflect the values demonstrated by the players during the tournament.

I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread hatred and racism across the world, Mbappé said in the statement widely circulated by international media.

According to multiple international reports, the Paraguayan government later issued a statement distancing itself from the senator’s alleged comments. The government reportedly reaffirmed its opposition to racism, xenophobia, intolerance and all forms of discrimination.

The French Football Federation (FFF) also issued a statement condemning the alleged remarks and expressing its support for Mbappé. The federation described the reported comments as unacceptable and said it intended to pursue legal action.

The racist remarks targeting Kylian Mbappé are utterly abhorrent and unacceptable,” the federation said, adding that it remains committed to combating racism and discrimination in football.

The FFF further stated that attacks directed at members of the French national team are an affront to the country they represent and should not go unchallenged.

The latest incident has reignited discussions about racism in football and the abuse frequently faced by players on social media. Mbappé has previously been subjected to racist abuse, including after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, when he and several French teammates were targeted online.

Football governing bodies, players’ unions and anti-discrimination organisations have repeatedly called for stronger action against racist behaviour, both inside stadiums and across digital platforms.

As of the time of reporting, neither FIFA nor tournament organisers had publicly announced any disciplinary measures related to the controversy. However, the incident has generated significant international attention, with football stakeholders renewing calls for greater accountability and stronger efforts to eliminate racism from the sport
