64th Nigeria Independence: We Must Reform For Progress Or Collapse – Tinubu

ABUJA: President Bola Tinubu said Nigeria  on Tuesday made a live broadcast as Nigerians celebrate her 64th independence day. Nigeria got her independence from the colonial Master (British Government) on October, 1 1960

The President of Nigeria stated that the nation had to decide between “reform for progress and prosperity or carry on business-as-usual and collapse” on October 1, 2024, the 64th anniversary of the country’s independence.

According to Tinubu, in order for Nigeria to survive, his administration made the decision to change the country’s political economy and security architecture.

The President saluted the resilience of the Nigerian people as well, pointing out that their nation has endured crises that have caused other countries to fall apart.

The removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign currency rates, which many Nigerians thought were to blame for the unimaginable inflation and skyrocketing living and fuel costs in the nation, have been criticized by critics of Tinubu’s dual policies. In the past two years, thousands of Nigerians have taken to the streets as a result of untold hardship

He said, “Dear compatriots, our independence anniversary gives us another chance to reflect on how far we have gone in our journey to nation-building and to renew our commitment to building a better nation that will serve present and future generations of Nigerians.

The former governor of Lagos told Nigerians that his administration was working hard to bring down the high cost of living while expressing sympathy for the possible economic hardship his policies may have caused.

Tinubu begged for more time and patience during his second Independence Day Anniversary Broadcast on Tuesday, stating that his administration is retooling its economic policies for the sake of all Nigerians.

While we celebrate the progress we have made as a people in the last sixty-four years, we must also recognise some of our missed opportunities and mistakes of the past. If we are to become one of the greatest nations on earth, as God has destined us to be, our mistakes must not be allowed to follow us into the future.

My administration took over the leadership of our country 16 months ago at a critical juncture. The economy faced many headwinds, and our physical security was highly impaired

We found ourselves at a dizzying crossroads, where we must choose between two paths: reform for progress and prosperity or carry on business-as-usual and collapse. We decided to reform our political economy and defence architecture.

President Bola Tinubu says his administration is focused on restoring calm to the trouble parts of the North so that farmers displaced by bandits and kidnapping may return to their farmlands to boost food production.

We anticipate an unprecedented rise in the production of food and a significant decrease in food prices.  I assure you, we shall not falter on this.

The President claims that his administration is winning the war on terrorism and banditry with the goal of eliminating all dangers posed by violent extremism, abduction for ransom, and Boko Haram.

Tinubu boasted that his administration had eliminated terrorist and bandit commanders faster than any administration.

Within one year, our government has eliminated Boko Haram and bandit commanders faster than ever. As of the last count, over 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders have been eliminated by our gallant troops in the Northeast, Northwest, and some other parts of the country,” he said.
