ABUJA: Nigerian Army has confirmed the rise of a new terrorist group called Lukarawas, which is contributing to the growing insecurity in Nigeria’s Northwestern states, particularly Sokoto and Kebbi. The group, which is affiliated with extremist factions in the Sahel region, including those in Mali and Niger, is reportedly intensifying violence in the area.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, outlined the threat posed by the Lukarawas and assured the public that the Nigerian military is actively engaged in containing their activities.
He explained that the group’s presence in Nigeria’s Northwest coincided with increased instability in the Sahel following the coup in Niger, which severed critical military cooperation between Nigeria and the Nigerien government.
The Lukarawas group has begun making incursions into northern Nigeria, particularly in Sokoto and Kebbi states, General Buba said. They are linked to terrorists operating in the Sahel region, especially those from Mali and Niger, and are exploiting the breakdown in regional security following the political upheaval in Niger.
