UMUDIKE: Nigeria has taken a major step toward industrial transformation with the launch of its first university-based Manufacturing Technology Innovation Hub, a project designed to drive innovation, entrepreneurship and local manufacturing while equipping young Nigerians with practical skills for the future economy.

The landmark Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) was inaugurated on Monday at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) in Abia State.

The innovation hub is a collaborative initiative involving the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the Abia State Government.

According to him, the Federal Government is committed to repositioning higher education as a driver of economic growth, job creation and industrial competitiveness.

He explained that universities must evolve beyond their traditional teaching and research roles to become innovation ecosystems capable of producing solutions for national development.

“This project is more than the commissioning of another university facility. It represents a national vision that positions our universities as catalysts for industrial transformation, entrepreneurship and sustainable economic development, he said.

Alausa reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting research, innovation and talent development in line with President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1 trillion Nigerian economy by 2030.

She said the facility represents more than a physical structure, explaining that it is designed to encourage collaboration across engineering, business, technology and the creative industries.

According to her, innovation thrives where diverse ideas meet and where failure is viewed as an essential part of the learning process.

“This Innovation Pod represents a commitment to unlocking the creative and innovative potential of Africa’s youth, she said.

She said the initiative aims to support 10,000 startups, help 1,000 high-growth businesses expand across the continent, improve the livelihoods of more than 100 million Africans and generate $10 billion in economic value over the next decade.

Attafuah also commended TETFund for its continued investment in modern infrastructure across Nigerian universities, describing the agency as a key partner in strengthening tertiary education.

Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Prof. Ursala Akanwa, described the commissioning of the UniPod as a defining moment in the institution’s history.
