The Anambra State Government has confirmed the arrest of a controversial cleric, Pastor Harrison Charles, founder of Day Spring Assembly in Awada, Onitsha, over disturbing allegations involving dozens of women and alleged abuse of religious authority.
Security operatives under the state-backed Agunechemba security outfit reportedly arrested the pastor following a viral video that sparked public outrage and prompted immediate investigation.
According to officials, the pastor is accused of:
- Taking as many as 75 women from their husbands as wives
- Encouraging alleged wife-swapping practices among church members
- Operating what authorities describe as a fraudulent religious structure
Government spokesperson Dr. Ejimofor Opara confirmed that the suspect is currently in police custody while investigations continue.
Authorities also disclosed a shocking discovery during the arrest operation.
Dr. Opara stated that operatives allegedly found 11 babies inside the pastor’s residence, with the cleric claiming he is the father of the children, each linked to different women he refers to as wives.
He further claimed he could not accurately state the total number of wives or children under his care, according to officials.
The case has now been transferred to the police for full investigation, as the government works to verify the authenticity of the allegations.
Authorities stressed that: No court has convicted the pastor, and all claims remain under investigation.
The state government says it is intensifying its crackdown on individuals suspected of exploiting religious influence for personal or criminal gain.
The arrest comes amid a broader campaign by the Anambra State Government against alleged fake pastors and unregulated ministries. Several similar cases have recently been prosecuted as part of efforts to regulate religious activities and protect citizens.
