Governor Umo Eno Hints at Possible Political Shift Amid Concerns Over PDP’s Future

UYO-AKWA IBOM: Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has stirred speculation about a possible political shift after publicly questioning the long-term viability of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a platform for his political future beyond 2027.

During a constituency outreach on Tuesday in Ikot Akpankuk, Ukanafun Local Government Area, Governor Eno likened the PDP to a malfunctioning aircraft, implying that he may be considering an alternative ”political flight” a metaphor many observers interpret as a signal toward a potential move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

If you were about to fly with Ibom Air and the aircraft developed a fault that made it unable to take off, wouldn’t you board another available plane to get to your destination? Eno asked, addressing a large crowd at the Town Square gathering for the Ukanafun/Oruk Anam federal constituency.

His remarks come amid growing turbulence within the PDP, marked by internal divisions and high-profile defections, including that of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the APC.

Despite voicing doubts about the PDP’s trajectory, Governor Eno urged his supporters to remain committed to his administration’s goals, stressing that delivering results for the people remains his top priority.

As part of the outreach, over 400 constituents received empowerment packages, including Traders and Farmers Grants, significant MSME support, and equipment aid.

Specifically, 154 traders received grants, 116 farmers were supported, four individuals received N5 million each for business ventures, and 131 others benefited from equipment distributions.

Governor Eno advised beneficiaries to use the support wisely, warning against risky investments like Ponzi schemes. We must continue to engage with our people.

Governance doesn’t end with elections, he said. We’re here to listen, assess your needs, and share our plans and achievements.

He also noted that four of the state’s 10 federal constituencies have been covered in the ongoing engagement tour, with plans to reach all before finalizing the 2026 budget. We’ll evaluate your requests and act based on available resources. What can’t be done now will be considered in future budgets, Eno added. This government belongs to you—it is for you, with you, and by you.

Though Governor Eno has not officially announced a defection, his remarks have intensified debates about the shifting political landscape in Akwa Ibom and the future of the PDP nationally.
