The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has granted waivers to former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, and former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei, clearing the way for both politicians to contest senatorial seats in the 2027 general elections under the party’s platform.
The decision followed the formal defection of the two political heavyweights from the All-Progressives Congress (APC) to the NDC, a move seen as a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections in Delta State.
According to a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Osa Director Esq, Omo-Agege received approval to contest the Delta Central Senatorial seat, while Ochei was cleared to run for the Delta North Senatorial district.
The party described both politicians as experienced leaders with strong political influence, grassroots support and proven records in public service.
The statement said the NDC was pleased to welcome the duo into the party and assured them of a credible and inclusive political platform to pursue their ambitions.
The party warmly welcomes both leaders into its ranks and assures them of a credible, inclusive and people-oriented platform to pursue their political ambitions while contributing to the development of Delta State and Nigeria, the statement read.
The NDC leadership explained that the waivers were approved based on the political experience, leadership credentials and democratic contributions of both Omo-Agege and Ochei.
According to the party, the two politicians possess the competence, institutional experience and grassroots networks required to mount strong senatorial campaigns ahead of the 2027 polls.
The party also expressed confidence that both men would provide effective representation for their respective senatorial districts if elected.
The defection of Omo-Agege and Ochei to the NDC is expected to reshape the political landscape in Delta State as parties begin strategic alignments ahead of the next general elections.
Political observers believe the move could strengthen the NDC’s influence in Delta State and increase competition among major political parties in the state.
Omo-Agege previously served as Deputy President of the Senate and was one of the leading figures in the APC in Delta State, while Ochei is a former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly with significant political structures across Delta North.
The party further reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, transparency and inclusiveness, saying the waiver approvals reflect its determination to build a stronger political structure before the 2027 elections.
According to the statement, the NDC aims to provide Nigerians with a viable political alternative capable of addressing governance and development challenges across the country.
The development comes amid increasing political consultations, defections and coalition talks among opposition parties as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum nationwide.
