Wike’s Grip on Rivers Politics: How the FCT Minister Controls Oil rich Rivers Power Game

PORTHARCOURT: The political crisis involving Siminalayi Fubara and Nyesom Wike has continued to dominate discussions about power, control, and political influence in Rivers State and Nigeria’s wider political landscape. Fubara, who was largely unknown in active partisan politics before the 2023 governorship election, was handpicked and strongly backed by Wike to succeed him as governor of the oil-rich state. However, shortly after assuming office, a fierce power struggle emerged as Fubara attempted to assert independence from Wike’s political structure.

Political observers believe Wike retained enormous influence over Rivers State after leaving office to become Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Wike was said to maintain strong control over the political machinery in the state, including key stakeholders within the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The conflict between both camps escalated when lawmakers loyal to Wike allegedly moved several times to initiate impeachment efforts against Fubara. The crisis later attracted national attention, forcing presidential intervention to prevent a complete breakdown of governance in Rivers State.

Despite interventions, the rivalry exposed deep cracks within the People’s Democratic Party, with analysts accusing Wike of weakening the opposition party at both state and national levels.

His political decisions and alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress further intensified debates about loyalty, influence, and power realignment in Nigeria.

Wike’s influence has remained a major factor in Rivers politics, with many describing him as the dominant political figure in the South-South region. His ability to determine political outcomes across party lines has continued to generate controversy, especially after his reported endorsement of political allies outside the traditional PDP structure.

The crisis also sparked ethnic and regional conversations, particularly among sections of the Ijaw political community, who believed Fubara’s emergence represented broader representation for the region. However, ongoing political realignments and succession discussions ahead of future elections have reshaped alliances across Rivers State.

Analysts say the Rivers political battle may ultimately influence Nigeria’s broader power equation ahead of future national elections, especially as both the PDP and APC continue to battle for dominance in one of the country’s richest and most politically strategic states.
