LONDON: The United Kingdom has reaffirmed that Nigerian citizens and nationals of 32 other African countries must continue to obtain a visa before travelling to or transiting through the UK, following an update to its immigration guidance.
The clarification, issued by the UK Home Office, confirms that travelers from the affected countries are still required to secure entry clearance before arriving in Britain, whether their visit is for tourism, education, business, family engagements or other short-term purposes.
The updated guidance applies to visits of up to six months and forms part of the UK’s broader immigration and border management framework aimed at strengthening compliance with existing entry regulations.
According to the revised immigration guidance, the visa requirement is not limited to visitors whose final destination is the United Kingdom.
Passengers making connecting flights through British airports may also be required to obtain a transit visa, depending on their nationality and individual travel circumstances.
The Home Office advised prospective travelers to verify their visa requirements before booking flights, warning that failure to obtain the appropriate travel documents could result in denied boarding, travel delays or refusal of entry upon arrival.
The UK government noted that citizens of more than 100 countries and territories remain subject to visa requirements before entering the country, except where specific exemptions apply.
The immigration rules also cover stateless individuals and travelers using documents other than officially recognized national passports or approved identity documents.
Authorities emphasized that entry clearance must be secured before departure to avoid complications during international travel.
Nigeria continues to be among the African nations whose citizens must obtain a UK visa before traveling.
