Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has sparked widespread reactions on social media after questioning the late Alexx Ekubo’s decision to keep his marriage away from the public eye.
The controversy emerged following the first public appearance of Anwuli, the late actor’s wife, during his service of songs held in Lagos on Wednesday, June 10. Alexx Ekubo reportedly died in May after battling metastatic kidney cancer.
Reacting to a post on X, formerly Twitter, Yul Edochie argued that public figures should not hide aspects of their personal lives because of fear of criticism or gossip.
According to him, celebrities should live openly and not allow public opinion to dictate their choices.
His comments came after an X user defended the late actor’s decision, saying Alexx intentionally kept his marriage private to shield his wife from what was described as the vulture internet.
The user wrote that even after his death, blogs had already begun bringing his widow into the spotlight, adding that being a public figure should not come at the expense of personal peace.
Responding, Yul insisted that hiding one’s spouse from the public was unnecessary.
People must learn to stop worrying about what others say. No matter what you do, people will always talk. Leave blogs to blog and enjoy your life,” he stated.
However, the remarks quickly triggered mixed reactions among Nigerians, with many insisting that the late actor had every right to keep his family life private.
Several social media users criticized Yul Edochie for commenting on the personal decisions of a deceased colleague, while others defended his opinion, saying public figures should embrace openness.
The debate has once again raised questions about privacy, celebrity culture, and the pressures that come with fame in the age of social media.
