ABUJA: The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, on Tuesday vowed to eradicate all forms of electoral malpractice including vote-buying as Nigeria moves toward the 2027 general elections.
Amupitan, who assumed office in October, made the declaration while swearing in Prof. Adeniran Tella as the new Resident Electoral Commissioner for Oyo State at INEC headquarters in Abuja.
Describing the ceremony as a “solemn call to duty, the INEC boss said the commission’s integrity must remain intact, stressing that the credibility of the nation’s electoral system is the foundation of its democracy.
The eyes of the nation are upon us. The public trust placed in INEC is sacred, he said.
He warned that any compromise of INEC’s guidelines, values or procedures whether by omission or commission would not be tolerated.
Amupitan tasked Tella with restoring public confidence in the voting process, insisting that voters must be assured that “their choice truly counts.
The new REC, a Professor of Strategic Management and Public Policy at Atiba University, Oyo, previously served as REC in Oyo and Ekiti states.
He pledged full commitment to the commission’s mission and thanked the chairman for his guidance.
The appointment comes as INEC intensifies reforms aimed at strengthening electoral administration nationwide.
