ABUJA: Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills will ease the financial burden on poor Nigerians and small businesses once signed into law.
The four executive bills, introduced recently, have sparked opposition from the 36 state governors, who are calling for their withdrawal to allow for further consultations. While some governors are reconsidering their positions, Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum has urged his northern colleagues to reject the bills, arguing that their implementation would harm the region’s economy.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Agbese encouraged Nigerians to support the tax reform bills, emphasizing that lawmakers prioritize the nation’s interest over personal or regional concerns.

We aim to debate these bills on Tuesday, and we anticipate a thorough discussion leading to their passage. Many colleagues who were initially opposed to the bills are now advocating for their swift approval, he said. By next week, we expect even more support, as this is not just about lawmakers. These bills affect all Nigerians, from corporate executives to rural farmers. If passed, they will revitalize the economy and accelerate critical infrastructure development
Agbese commended President Tinubu for leading the push for progressive taxation, noting that the proposed changes would shift the tax burden away from vulnerable Nigerians and small businesses. This new approach to taxation will be beneficial for everyone, he concluded.
