KANO: Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, visited Bunkure Local Government Area in Kano State on Wednesday to offer his condolences and financial support to the families of the 16 travelers who were tragically killed in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo State.
During the visit, Senator Barau met with the grieving families, who hailed from Bunkure, Kibiya, Rano, and Garko LGAs, at the At-Taqwa Mosque in Sabon Fegi, Bunkure.
The delegation included notable figures such as the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, the Managing Director of the North West Development Commission, Professor Abdullahi Shehu Ma’aji, and other prominent dignitaries.
A statement from Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy Senate President, confirmed the details of the visit and the support extended to the bereaved families.
Senator Barau, who expressed his deep sorrow for the tragic incident, assured the families of the deceased that justice would be pursued. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring the perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
He also disclosed that, in addition to the 14 suspects initially arrested, two more individuals had been apprehended in connection with the attack.
To ease the families’ hardship, Senator Barau announced a donation of N1 million for each of the 16 bereaved families, amounting to N16 million in total. The Deputy Senate President also pledged to sponsor a motion in the Senate to address the incident when the National Assembly reconvenes later this month.
“I am here to express my deepest sympathies for the tragic incident that claimed the lives of 16 of our brothers last Thursday. May Allah grant them Jannatul Firdaus and provide swift recovery to those injured,” Senator Barau stated during the visit.
He further emphasized, “The incident deeply troubled me. I immediately contacted the state governor, security agencies, and other relevant stakeholders.
They acted promptly, leading to the arrest of 14 suspects initially, and subsequently, two more. The state governor, who visited me in Abuja, has assured me of the state government’s support.”
“We will not treat this matter lightly. We are committed to ensuring that the culprits are brought to book and face the full force of the law,” he affirmed.
Speaking on behalf of the grieving families, the Chief Imam of the area, Sheikh Zainul Abidina Auwal, expressed profound gratitude to Senator Barau for his support in seeking justice.
He lauded the Deputy Senate President as a vital leader for the nation’s progress, commending his efforts in securing justice for the victims and his unwavering dedication to the welfare of the affected communities.
The visit not only provided much-needed financial support but also highlighted Senator Barau’s commitment to ensuring justice and standing with the people during times of crisis.
