Delta CP Demotes Two Police Officers Caught Extorting Motorist via POS in Viral Video

The Delta State Police Command has demoted two officers after they were caught in a viral video receiving money allegedly extorted from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal inside a police station in Asaba.

The disciplinary action followed the conclusion of an orderly room trial ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, over the incident, which occurred on January 13, 2026, at the ‘C’ Division Police Station in Asaba.

The officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, were found guilty of extortion, discreditable conduct, and disobedience to lawful orders under the provisions of the Police Act 2020.

Following the findings, CP Oyeniyi approved the demotion of Inspector Jeremiah to the rank of Sergeant, while Corporal Ehirim was reduced to the rank of Constable.

The Commissioner described the sanctions as part of the Command’s commitment to maintaining discipline, professionalism and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.

He reiterated the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which prohibits the use of Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals or any electronic payment platform within police formations across the country.

According to the CP, no police officer is authorised to demand, collect or receive money from members of the public under any guise, warning that any personnel found violating the directive would face appropriate disciplinary measures.

Oyeniyi urged officers and personnel of the Delta State Command to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism and respect for the rights of citizens in the discharge of their duties.

He said the punishment meted out to the two officers should serve as a deterrent to others and reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to strengthen public confidence through transparency and accountability.

The Police Commissioner also encouraged residents of Delta State to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through the Command’s Complaint Response Unit, stressing that complaints from the public remain vital in sanitising the Force and promoting responsible policing.

The disciplinary action comes amid renewed efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to eliminate extortion, corruption and other forms of misconduct among officers while improving public trust and service delivery.
