LAGOS: In a groundbreaking move for Nigeria’s creative and literary sector, the Book Buzz Foundation, in partnership with the European Union (EU), has officially launched the Nigeria Picture Book Project a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to promote authentic Nigerian storytelling for children through capacity building, mentorship, and collaborative publishing.
The colourful launch ceremony took place recently at the foundation’s headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos, bringing together leading voices in literature, education, art, and cultural development to celebrate what many have described as a new dawn in children’s book publishing in Nigeria
Speaking at the event, the Founder of Book Buzz Foundation, Lola Shoneyin, an award-winning author and publisher, said the project aims to transform the landscape of Nigerian children’s literature by connecting authors, illustrators, and publishers to produce high-quality picture books that authentically reflect the country’s diversity, languages, and cultural heritage.
According to Shoneyin, the EU-supported initiative seeks to:
-
Empower Nigerian creatives through mentorship and workshops.
-
Facilitate the production of locally inspired picture books that help children see themselves represented in stories that foster imagination, empathy, and pride in Nigerian identity.
-
Build sustainable structures to strengthen the children’s book ecosystem in Nigeria.
“This partnership represents a shared commitment to investing in creativity, cultural identity, and education,” the foundation said in a statement. It ensures that the next generation of Nigerian children can access stories that celebrate who they are and where they come from.”
