Lagos Schools Tighten Security After Anonymous Threat Messages

The Lagos State Police Command has deployed officers on a permanent basis to Grange School and Greensprings School (Anthony Campus) in Ikeja following threats of attacks on the schools by unknown persons.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Olohundare Jimoh, ordered the deployment after the management of the affected schools temporarily shut down operations upon receiving security threats through WhatsApp messages from an unidentified number.

Grange School, Ikeja, announced its temporary closure on Wednesday. In a letter dated January 21, 2026, and addressed to parents, the Head of School, Richard McMahon, said the decision was taken due to a “security-related concern.

The letter stated that although there was no immediate danger, the school chose to act responsibly by engaging security agencies and putting necessary safety measures in place. The school said it would use the closure period to obtain official guidance from relevant authorities, stressing that the safety of students, staff and families remained its top priority.

Similarly, Greensprings School, Anthony Campus, asked students who reported for school on Thursday to return home while it assessed the security situation. An official of the school confirmed that assessment examinations scheduled for Thursday afternoon were aborted, adding that it was uncertain when normal academic activities would resume.

It was also gathered that another nearby school, Avi-Cenna International School, Ikeja, was considering a temporary closure over the threat.

However, in a statement on Thursday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said the command had neutralized the threat and declared the schools safe for continued academic and administrative activities after a comprehensive security sweep.

According to the statement, the Human Resources Manager and Chief Security Officer of both schools had reported receiving distress messages from the same unknown number at the Ikeja Divisional Police Headquarters on Tuesday, January 21, 2026.

The police said investigations had commenced to trace, identify and apprehend the sender(s) of the threat messages. It added that combined teams of police personnel had been permanently deployed to the schools to ensure round-the-clock security.

The command disclosed that operatives from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear unit, the Rapid Response Squad and other tactical teams were mobilized to the schools for on-the-spot assessment.

A comprehensive sweep of the school premises, including classrooms, offices, playgrounds and surrounding areas, was conducted to rule out the presence of explosives or other dangerous materials,” the statement said, noting that no hazardous devices were found.

The police urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, assuring parents, guardians and school authorities of its commitment to safety and public order.

Meanwhile, the Association of Private Educators in Nigeria said it had received assurances from the Lagos State Government that the situation was under control. The association, however, advised schools to further strengthen security measures and remain vigilant.
