Atiku’s Surprise 2027 Running Mate Choice Emerges as Amaechi Reportedly Accepts Key Role

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly settled on former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The reported move comes after weeks of consultations and negotiations within the opposition coalition as preparations intensify ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election.

According to sources familiar with the development, the proposed Atiku-Amaechi ticket is aimed at balancing the North-East and South-South geopolitical zones, a strategy political analysts believe could boost the ADC’s chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other opposition parties.

Amaechi’s reported emergence has raised eyebrows, especially after the former Rivers State governor had publicly dismissed speculation linking him to a vice-presidential slot. After purchasing his presidential nomination form, he maintained that he was pursuing his own ambition and opposed suggestions of a consensus arrangement.

However, insiders disclosed that Atiku assured Amaechi of a prominent role both during the campaign and in a potential administration, helping to secure his acceptance of the position.

The development comes amid growing political realignments and coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general elections, with key opposition figures repositioning across party lines.

Meanwhile, Atiku used his Democracy Day message to criticise the administration of President Bola Tinubu, accusing the government of actions that he said undermine the spirit of June 12 and democratic governance.

In his statement marking Democracy Day, the former vice president urged Nigerians to resist intimidation, defend democratic institutions and oppose what he described as attempts to weaken opposition parties.

According to Atiku, the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists must not be forgotten, adding that Nigerians should remain committed to preserving the ideals of June 12.

He also alleged that opposition parties have come under sustained pressure through internal crises, defections and the misuse of state institutions, warning against what he termed democratic backsliding.

Atiku further stressed that institutions meant to serve Nigerians impartially should not be used for political persecution, insisting that democratic freedoms must be protected as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections.
