ADC Lawmakers Demand INEC Chairman’s Removal Over Alleged Bias Ahead of 2027 Elections

ABUJA: The House of Representatives caucus of the African Democratic Congress has called for the immediate removal and prosecution of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, over allegations of partisanship.

The demand was outlined in a communiqué issued after a caucus meeting in Abuja, where lawmakers raised concerns about the electoral umpire’s neutrality ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the caucus, recent actions and alleged statements linked to Amupitan have cast doubt on his ability to conduct free, fair, and credible elections. They referenced a controversial social media account purportedly connected to the INEC chairman, which allegedly contained partisan remarks in support of the ruling party.

Although INEC has denied any link between Amupitan and the account, the lawmakers insisted that digital analyses suggest otherwise, raising questions about transparency and integrity within the commission.

In response, INEC officials maintained that there is no verified forensic evidence tying the chairman to the account, dismissing the allegations as unproven.

The controversy comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, particularly over the recognition of former Senate President David Mark as the party’s authentic leader. The caucus accused INEC of interfering in internal party affairs by withdrawing earlier recognition of Mark and allegedly backing a rival faction.

Lawmakers warned that such actions could undermine the party’s ability to participate effectively in the 2027 elections, describing the situation as a threat to democratic processes.

They further alleged possible judicial interference in political matters and disclosed plans to petition the National Judicial Council to investigate judges accused of partisan conduct.

Citing concerns raised by Afam Osigwe, President of the Nigerian Bar Association, the caucus noted growing public distrust in the judiciary, particularly regarding perceived political influence over judicial decisions.

The ADC lawmakers urged Nigerians and key institutions to prioritise the protection of democratic values, warning that continued controversy surrounding electoral and judicial bodies could erode public confidence ahead of the next general elections.
