PORTHARCOURT: The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has pushed back against recent comments by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over the 2027 governorship succession in the state.
Speaking in Port Harcourt, the party’s state chairman, Chukwudi Dimkpa, stressed that the choice of a governor ultimately lies with the electorate, underscoring the importance of democratic participation in determining leadership.
Dimkpa noted that the ADC is positioning itself as a credible alternative, anchored on transparency, internal democracy, and inclusive governance. He said the party aims to build a broad-based political movement that reflects the aspirations of Rivers residents ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing the issue of zoning, the ADC chairman acknowledged its relevance in fostering balance between riverine and upland communities. However, he emphasised that competence and capacity must remain central in selecting a governorship candidate.
According to him, the party will adopt a consultative approach to produce a candidate capable of delivering effective governance while enjoying wide acceptance across the state.
He added that decisions regarding the party’s flagbearer would be taken at the appropriate time, with a focus on unity and strengthening democratic processes.
The ADC further highlighted governance, security, and economic development as top priorities for the people of Rivers State, insisting that leadership choices in 2027 must reflect these pressing concerns.
