The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has issued an apology for his recent verbal attacks on the Federal High Court and Justice Binta Nyako.
Kanu’s new counsel, Kanu Agabi, SAN, conveyed the apology on his behalf during a court session on Friday before Justice James Omotosho. He also extended apologies to the Federal Government’s lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, and Kanu’s former legal team led by Aloy Ejimakor.
Agabi, a former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, acknowledged that Kanu had been frustrated for a long time, leading to his outburst against Justice Nyako.
He admitted that the remarks were unjustified and expressed regret to both the prosecution team and the chairman of the Body of Benchers.
Describing Kanu as a good man, Agabi urged that allowances be made for mistakes, emphasizing the need to build rather than destroy.
In response, the prosecution accepted the apology and assured they would work towards an expeditious hearing of the case. Awomolo noted that he understood the emotional intensity surrounding the matter.

Justice Omotosho acknowledged that the prolonged trial may have weighed heavily on Kanu, pointing out that since his arraignment in 2015 at the age of 47, he has spent a decade in legal limbo without clarity on his fate.
He suggested that such uncertainty could have influenced Kanu’s remarks.
Additionally, Justice Omotosho offered an apology to the prosecution on Kanu’s behalf, underscoring the need for civility as the case progresses.
