Why Trump’s Appearance at the NBA Finals Sparked Massive Reactions Online

NEW-YORK: United States President Donald Trump made history on Monday night by becoming the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game, drawing massive attention as the New York Knicks hosted the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the 2026 championship series at Madison Square Garden.

Trump’s presence at the iconic arena generated significant buzz before tip-off and prompted heightened security measures around the venue.

According to a post shared by Fox News on X, the president appeared on the Madison Square Garden Jumbotron during the national anthem with his hand over his heart.

He was accompanied by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, his granddaughter Kai Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

On the court, the San Antonio Spurs secured a dramatic 115-111 victory over the New York Knicks, ending the Knicks’ 13-game playoff winning streak and reducing New York’s lead in the series to 2-1.

French star Victor Wembanyama delivered another dominant performance with 32 points, eight rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals. Rookie Stephon Castle contributed 23 points off the bench.

Despite a strong showing from Jalen Brunson, costly turnovers and a late surge from the Spurs denied the Knicks a crucial home victory.

Trump’s attendance led to enhanced security around Madison Square Garden, including street closures, restrictions on bags and recommendations for fans to arrive early. Outdoor watch parties planned around the arena were also cancelled.

The game attracted several celebrities, including Jay-Z, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Kylie Jenner, Timothée Chalamet, Spike Lee, Fat Joe and former NBA star Carmelo Anthony.

Trump’s historic appearance quickly sparked heated debate online.

One social media user, identified as @the_uglypatriot, praised the president’s attendance, describing it as a display of leadership and patriotism.

Others focused on the crowd’s reaction. Another user, @ESATEZZA, noted that while the moment was historic, boos from sections of the home crowd were clearly audible during the broadcast.

A third commentator, @veggiet, claimed it may have been one of the loudest negative reactions ever directed at a sitting president during a sporting event.

The historic appearance highlighted the deeply divided political atmosphere in the United States, even during one of the country’s biggest sporting events, as basketball fans witnessed drama both on and off the court.
