LAGOS: The Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Olajumoke Oduwole, has unveiled a Nord Demir vehicle assembled at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Assembly Plant as her official car, describing the decision as a show of confidence in Nigeria’s capacity for industrial innovation.
Dr. Oduwole, an alumna of UNILAG’s Faculty of Law and former lecturer at the institution, said the choice was symbolic, aimed at boosting local industry, creating jobs, supporting education, and proving that Nigerian institutions can deliver world-class solutions.
“This car is more than transportation; it is a symbol of faith in Nigeria. I chose UNILAG because this partnership strengthens local industry, encourages innovation, and provides opportunities for our young people. I will proudly drive it in Abuja and on official duties,” she said after starting the vehicle.
The Minister added that the decision aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes industrialization and economic stability.
“This is a practical demonstration of Mr. President’s Nigeria-First Initiative. By choosing this car, we are telling our young people that they can design and build products that the world will respect,” she added.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), Professor Bola Oboh, described the Minister’s action as a historic endorsement of UNILAG’s role in bridging academia and industry.
“It is not only symbolic but also inspirational that one of our own, who once studied and taught here, has returned as a minister to adopt a vehicle assembled by UNILAG students. It proves that with knowledge and innovation, Nigerians can achieve great things,” Oboh said.
During her visit, Dr. Oduwole toured the Nord Automobile facilities at UNILAG, including the assembly line, research and development unit, and showroom.
Since its establishment in July 2022, the UNILAG–Nord partnership has operated as Africa’s first university-based automobile assembly plant.
The facility has produced several vehicles and offers students hands-on experience in manufacturing, electric vehicle development, and even drone assembly.
For UNILAG, the milestone reinforces its reputation as “the University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride.” For Dr. Oduwole, it marks a full-circle journey from student to lecturer, to federal minister, and now a champion of Nigerian-made innovation.
As she drove away in her Nord Demir, UNILAG’s statement captured the spirit of the moment: Nigeria’s future will not be imported. It will be built here, by Nigerians, for Nigerians.”
