ASABA: Supporters of former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi often argue that one of the strongest testaments to his public service record is not merely what he accomplished in office, but what has not been found against him after leaving office.
Nearly a decade after completing his tenure as governor, Obi has not been charged or convicted by the Federal Government or anti-corruption agencies over the management of Anambra State’s finances during his administration. His supporters frequently contrast this with the experiences of several former governors across Nigeria who have faced investigations, criminal charges, or ongoing court cases relating to allegations of corruption, money laundering, or abuse of office.
They also point to the immediate aftermath of Obi’s administration. His successor, Willie Obiano, was arrested by the EFCC shortly after leaving office in 2022 over allegations of financial misconduct. Obiano has denied wrongdoing, was granted bail, and his legal proceedings have continued through the courts.
To Obi’s admirers, the contrast is significant. They argue that despite years of political rivalry, intense public scrutiny, and investigations into many former public officials, authorities have not established any criminal wrongdoing against Obi in relation to his stewardship of Anambra State.
His supporters also reference the Pandora Papers, noting that Obi publicly responded to the disclosures, stating that the offshore entities linked to him were legally declared and established for legitimate business purposes. To date, he has not been convicted of any offence arising from those revelations.
For many of his followers, these developments reinforce the image of Peter Obi as a disciplined, prudent, and accountable leader. They argue that his administration demonstrated that a governor could invest in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development while still leaving substantial financial reserves and investments for the incoming government.
Unlike several former governors and prominent politicians who have, at various times, faced corruption allegations, investigations, prosecutions, or convictions, Obi’s supporters contend that his financial record in public office has remained remarkably free of proven misconduct. They believe this strengthens his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most transparent political leaders.
Many of them describe Obi as a symbol of integrity in public office and believe he possesses the credibility needed to confront the systemic corruption that has undermined Nigeria’s development for decades. In their view, fighting corruption requires leaders whose personal records can withstand public scrutiny.
Whether one agrees with this assessment or not, Peter Obi has cultivated a reputation among many Nigerians as a politician associated with fiscal discipline, accountability, and prudent management of public resources. To his supporters, these qualities distinguish him from much of Nigeria’s political establishment and explain why they continue to regard him as a credible alternative for the country’s future leadership
