A fresh controversy has emerged within the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA) following allegations that the appointment of its new Director-General, Dr Abdulrazak Namdas, announced by President Bola Tinubu nearly a month ago, has yet to be implemented.
The development has fuelled uncertainty over the agency’s leadership, with reports indicating that the immediate past head, Dr Dakorinama George, continues to oversee official activities despite the presidential announcement naming Namdas as his successor.
President Tinubu had on June 26 approved Namdas’ appointment as Director-General of the BCDA. The announcement, made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated that the former House of Representatives spokesman would immediately assume office following the resignation of George, who reportedly stepped down to pursue an elective position in Rivers State.
However, despite the public announcement, Namdas is yet to formally resume duty, reportedly because he has not received his official appointment letter from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
The delay has triggered speculation over the implementation of the President’s directive, particularly as George has continued to represent the agency at official engagements.
One of such appearances was a recent meeting with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, where George reportedly sought the release of funds for ongoing BCDA projects across the country. He was also said to have discussed plans relating to infrastructure development and proposed investments in border communities.
The situation has generated criticism from political observers and members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who questioned why a presidential appointment announced publicly had not been fully executed.
