ABUJA: The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security cooperation with Nigeria, with President Donald Trump praising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and expressing support for ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism.
According to information released by the Nigerian Presidency, President Trump, in a letter addressed to President Tinubu, commended Nigeria’s determination to confront insecurity and said Washington remained committed to working alongside Abuja to improve regional stability. The communication highlights the growing security partnership between both countries and follows months of expanded defence collaboration.
The correspondence underscores the importance both governments attach to confronting terrorist organisations operating in Nigeria and the wider West African region. It also references ongoing defence cooperation, including intelligence sharing, military training and other joint security initiatives designed to improve Nigeria’s counter-terrorism capabilities.
The latest diplomatic exchange comes amid continuing military operations against insurgent groups in the North-East, where Nigerian security forces have intensified efforts to dismantle the operational capacity of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Military authorities have also reported recent successes under Operation HADIN KAI, including precision operations targeting suspected ISWAP logistics networks and commanders in parts of the Lake Chad region. Officials say the operations disrupted terrorist movement, destroyed equipment and weakened the group’s operational capabilities.
The renewed security cooperation reflects broader efforts by Nigeria and the United States to strengthen regional counter-terrorism strategies amid persistent threats from extremist organisations operating across the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin.
American officials have repeatedly stressed that although international efforts have significantly degraded terrorist organisations over the years, extremist groups continue to pose security challenges requiring sustained international cooperation, intelligence exchange and coordinated military action.
Analysts say closer defence ties between Abuja and Washington could further improve intelligence gathering, specialised military training and operational coordination against transnational terrorist networks.
Security remains one of the Federal Government’s highest priorities as authorities continue efforts to restore stability in communities affected by insurgency and violent attacks. Recent operations by Nigerian troops, supported through international security partnerships, are expected to remain focused on disrupting terrorist financing, logistics, recruitment and command structures.
The growing collaboration between Nigeria and the United States comes at a time when governments across Africa are seeking stronger regional and international partnerships to address evolving security threats, particularly those linked to cross-border extremist movements.
While both governments have expressed optimism about ongoing cooperation, security experts note that lasting success against insurgency will depend not only on military operations but also on improved intelligence, community engagement, economic development and humanitarian support for conflict-affected areas.
As Nigeria continues its campaign against terrorism, officials from both countries have signalled their intention to deepen cooperation in pursuit of lasting peace and security across the region.
