Liverpool fc suffered a surprising defeat to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, losing 2-1 to Eddie Howe’s resilient side.
Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak sealed the win for the Magpies, while Federico Chiesa’s solitary goal for Liverpool was merely a consolation.
It was a disappointing final for Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who, despite his efforts, couldn’t find an answer to Newcastle’s well-executed tactics.
Mohamed Salah, alongside his fellow attackers like Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, and Darwin Nunez, failed to make an impact, leaving the Reds unable to break down Newcastle’s defense.
In the wake of Liverpool’s defeat, former defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher suggested that the club needs to make signings in the attacking department.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher reflected on the match:
“It was probably one of the worst performances I’ve seen from Liverpool in a cup final,” Carragher said, as reported by Metro.
They’ve been excellent this season, losing just one league game, so it’s hard to be too critical. But this loss highlights where they need to improve.”
Carragher pointed out Liverpool’s lack of pace in attack:
“The absence of speed in attack is glaring. I feel for Mohamed Salah; he’s had quiet games before, like against PSG, and while he wasn’t at his best today, he isn’t getting enough support from the other attackers.

He went on to add:
“The other forwards are decent, but not exceptional. Liverpool needs to sign two new attackers this summer to play alongside Salah.
The last week has shown exactly what they need to strengthen, and that’s exciting because they are in the race for the league title but still need to improve in certain areas.”
Carragher’s assessment of Liverpool’s attacking struggles is spot on. If Salah isn’t on form, it’s hard to see which other player can step up and deliver for the team.
While the Egyptian has been Liverpool’s standout performer this season, even the best players have off days, and unfortunately for Liverpool, Salah’s dip in form came at a crucial time.
It’s clear that the Reds need reinforcements in attack—players who can share the responsibility of scoring goals alongside Salah to ensure the team isn’t left relying on one player to carry them.
