KANO: Tension is rapidly escalating in Kano as security forces have barricaded the palace of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, preventing him from attending an important royal ceremony in Bichi Local Government Area. The event, which was to witness the presentation of the staff of office to the newly appointed District Head of Bichi, has been marred by heavy security presence and heightened uncertainty.
According to sources within the Kano Emirate, heavily armed police officers, along with armoured personnel carriers (APCs), have surrounded the entrance to the Emir’s palace, effectively restricting movement in and out of the compound.
The Emir, who had been preparing to attend the event, was left in a state of confusion as he attempted to understand the reasons behind the sudden blockade. Sources reveal that he spent significant time on the phone, seeking clarity, but was ultimately instructed by security personnel to remain indoors.
One anonymous source within the palace described the scene, saying, The Emir had been ready to leave for the ceremony when security operatives arrived and ordered him to stay inside.
In an attempt to resolve the situation, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf dispatched a delegation to mediate between the Emir and the authorities. However, efforts to facilitate a peaceful resolution faced obstacles.
The governor’s representatives, according to reports, were not allowed past the barricade, leaving them stranded and unable to engage with the Emir directly. A source close to the state government confirmed the details, stating, “His Excellency sent representatives to meet with the Emir and mediate, but even they were not allowed past the barricade.”
The situation took another turn when security personnel cordoned off the venue of the Bichi event itself, further escalating tensions and leaving both attendees and organizers in a state of confusion. No one was allowed access to the event, which was supposed to be a key part of the region’s traditional and royal affairs.

The incident has raised a series of questions regarding the motivations behind such a strong security presence and restrictions. Some have speculated that the actions of the authorities may be politically motivated, though no concrete evidence has surfaced to support these claims. Both the state government and the Emirate Council have yet to issue any official statements, leaving the public to speculate about the reasons for the unusual blockade.
When reached for comment on the matter, Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, declined to provide any information, stating, “I cannot comment on the matter at this time.” This lack of clarity from the police has only deepened the sense of uncertainty surrounding the events.
As the situation continues to unfold, many are left wondering what the true motives behind the security measures are and whether this is part of a larger political struggle. The absence of a clear explanation from the authorities, coupled with the growing tensions, means that the matter will likely continue to dominate discussions in Kano and beyond.
