Outrage as Policeman Allegedly Shoots Unarmed Man in Delta, Sparks Nationwide Calls for Justice

Public outrage has intensified across Nigeria following the circulation of a disturbing video allegedly showing a police officer fatally shooting an unarmed man in Delta State, in what many have described as an extrajudicial killing.

The viral footage, widely shared on social media, is said to have captured officers attached to the Effurun Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force carrying out the act in broad daylight. The victim, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, appeared helpless, with his hands tied behind his back.

Moments before the shooting, the man was heard pleading for his life, insisting on his innocence and offering to assist the officers in locating another suspect.

I don’t know anything, officer. I beg, I go tell you everything… carry me go Sapele,” he reportedly said, in a desperate appeal that has since drawn emotional reactions nationwide.

The shocking nature of the video has sparked widespread condemnation, with Nigerians expressing anger and disbelief over what appears to be a blatant abuse of power. Many have questioned the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the identity of the officers involved and the justification for the killing.

The development has once again brought issues of police brutality and accountability to the forefront, reigniting longstanding concerns about the conduct of security agencies in the country.

Several public figures and civil society voices have demanded urgent action.
Nollywood actor Stanley Ontop openly criticised the Delta State Police Command, accusing it of a pattern of extrajudicial killings. He specifically called out the state’s Commissioner of Police, Adeyemi John, over what he described as growing impunity among officers.

In a strongly worded social media post, the actor warned that continued inaction could lead to mass protests, including planned road blockades in Asaba and Effurun.

Similarly, human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu urged the Federal Government to immediately investigate the incident. He described the killing as a live execution, alleging that the victim was denied any opportunity to defend himself.

According to him, the victim posed no threat at the time, as he was neither resisting arrest nor attempting to flee, but was instead begging for mercy.

The incident has further intensified public discourse on the urgent need for comprehensive police reforms in Nigeria. Many citizens have taken to social media platforms to demand transparency, justice, and accountability for the officers involved.

Analysts say the case reflects deeper systemic issues within the Nigeria Police Force, including weak oversight mechanisms and recurring allegations of human rights abuses.
The situation has also raised questions about internal disciplinary processes, with critics arguing that existing mechanisms, such as orderly room trials—are often insufficient to address serious misconduct.

As of the time of filing this report, the police authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, further fueling public frustration and suspicion of a potential cover-up.

The continued circulation of the video has only amplified calls for immediate intervention, with many Nigerians insisting that those responsible must be identified, prosecuted, and held accountable under the law.

With tensions rising, there are increasing concerns that failure to act swiftly could lead to civil unrest. Advocacy groups and concerned citizens have warned that justice must not only be done but be seen to be done in order to restore public confidence in law enforcement.

The incident stands as yet another stark reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria’s policing system and the urgent need to strengthen accountability, protect human rights, and rebuild trust between citizens and security institutions.
