NDC Clears Peter Obi for 2027 Presidential Primary

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has been cleared to contest in the presidential primary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general election.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by the chairman of the party’s National Screening Committee, Sam Egwu, in a video shared on the party’s official social media platform after the screening exercise held in Abuja on Tuesday.

Egwu said the committee was satisfied that Obi fulfilled all constitutional and statutory requirements to contest for the presidency under the party’s platform.

According to him, the screening committee thoroughly examined Obi’s qualifications and found that he had complied with the provisions of the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

He added that Obi provided satisfactory answers to all questions raised by the panel and was therefore cleared to participate in the party’s presidential primary on a date to be announced later.

Reacting to the development through his official X account, Obi said the screening session lasted more than two and a half hours, during which members of the committee scrutinised his credentials and engaged him on his plans for the country.

He disclosed that the panel reviewed his academic certificates, National Youth Service Corps documents, and age declaration papers, while also asking him to outline his vision for what he described as a new Nigeria and the leadership direction the country urgently needs.

Obi confirmed that following the process, he was officially cleared and handed the presidential nomination form for which he had earlier completed payment.

The former Anambra State governor also commended the committee for what he described as a transparent and professional exercise, praising the party leadership for upholding democratic principles in the lead-up to the 2027 polls.

The clearance comes at a time of growing political realignments across Nigeria, as opposition parties intensify consultations, coalition talks, and preparations for their primaries ahead of the next general election.
