Lagos Airport Monorail Design Approved, Five Stations Planned-Aviation minister

LAGOS: The design for a proposed monorail system connecting Ikeja Railway Station to the reconstructed Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 1 has been approved, according to a statement by the official involved in the project.

The official disclosed that the design was reviewed and approved during a meeting attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and engineering teams from both organisations.

The proposed monorail is expected to provide a rail connection between Ikeja Railway Station, the terminal point of the Lagos Red Line, and the airport’s Terminal 1, which is currently undergoing reconstruction.

According to the statement, the system will have five stations: Ikeja Station, Domestic Airport Station, Beesam Station, Toll Gate Station and MMIA Airport Station.

The project is intended to improve connectivity between the railway network and the airport, making it easier for commuters and air travellers to access the facility.

The official described the monorail as an integral component of the reconstruction of MMIA, one of Nigeria’s major aviation gateways.

However, the statement did not provide a construction timeline, project cost or proposed commencement date for passenger services.

Further details on the implementation of the project are expected as the airport reconstruction and associated infrastructure plans progress.
