Sony has just unveiled the official trailer for Karate Kid: Legends, the exciting new chapter in the beloved martial arts franchise, which will hit theaters on May 30. This upcoming film brings back iconic figures from the series, including Ralph Macchio, who will reprise his role as Daniel LaRusso, a character he first portrayed in the 1984 original Karate Kid. Joining him is Jackie Chan, who returns to the franchise as Mr. Han, a role he played in the 2010 Karate Kid remake.

The fresh face in the franchise is Ben Wang, star of American Born Chinese, who takes on the role of Li Fong, a new student under the mentorship of both Daniel and Mr. Han. Wang was chosen after a worldwide search, in which thousands of young actors from across the globe auditioned for the coveted role. The selection process was particularly focused on martial arts proficiency, and Wang’s impressive skill set—ranging from karate and wing chun/kung fu to gumdo, kempo, and taekwondo—helped him stand out.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wang shared how the role resonated with him personally: I was the target audience when that movie came out. I was exactly the age of the character. He also revealed a special connection to the film’s setting, explaining, That whole movie takes place in Beijing, and I’d just come back from living for a year in Beijing. Also, I grew up watching Jackie Chan movies. He is the first memory I have of knowing what an actor is. It was all of my favorite things in one place.
