Kano Court Remands Man Accused Of Killing Wife Two Months After Wedding

A Magistrate Court in Kano State has ordered the remand of a man, Ali Suleiman, over the alleged killing of his wife, Maryam Nababa Badamasi, barely two months after their wedding.

The defendant was arraigned before the court on charges bordering on alleged culpable homicide in a case that has drawn widespread public attention due to the circumstances surrounding the couple’s marriage and the motive alleged by prosecutors.

According to reports, the prosecution alleged that Suleiman killed his wife in an attempt to gain access to her wealth, claiming that the deceased came from a wealthy and influential family.

During the court session, prosecuting counsel Aisha Habibu Hassan informed the court that the allegations against the defendant involved a capital offence under Nigerian law.

She explained that the prosecution required additional time to seek legal advice and complete necessary procedures before the matter could proceed further.

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant pending the outcome of legal consultations and the filing of appropriate legal recommendations.

Presiding magistrate Sadiya Zakirai granted the request and ordered that the accused be remanded in custody pending further legal advice and continuation of proceedings.

The court did not entertain a plea from the defendant at this stage because magistrate courts generally lack jurisdiction to fully try capital offences such as culpable homicide.

Legal experts say such cases are usually transferred to higher courts after initial proceedings and legal review by the Ministry of Justice.

Although details surrounding the death were not extensively disclosed during the hearing, the case has already generated strong reactions on social media and within the local community, especially because the marriage reportedly lasted only two months before the tragic incident.

Residents and observers have continued to express shock over the allegations, with many calling for a thorough investigation and speedy justice.

The matter is expected to proceed after legal advice is issued by the appropriate authorities, which will determine the next phase of prosecution.

Authorities have yet to release additional information regarding the circumstances leading to Maryam’s death or whether further suspects may be investigated in connection with the case.
