WASHINGTON D C: Investigators say a gunman who attempted to breach a high-profile dinner in Washington targeted Donald Trump and other top government officials, raising fresh concerns over security at the event.
The incident occurred during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner held at the Washington Hilton, where the US president, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, cabinet members and lawmakers were in attendance.
According to authorities, the suspect attempted to force his way past a security checkpoint before being confronted by Secret Service agents. A brief exchange of gunfire followed, after which the attacker was subdued and taken into custody at the scene.
Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche said preliminary findings indicate the suspect intended to target members of the administration.
“He’s not actively cooperating. I expect that he will be formally charged in federal court,” Blanche said, adding that investigators are still working to determine the motive.
Officials disclosed that the suspect was armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun and knives, and had been staying at the same hotel hosting the event. He reportedly travelled across several US cities before arriving in Washington.
Trump later revealed that the attacker had written what he described as an “anti-Christian” manifesto, while reports suggest the suspect had outlined plans to target officials based on rank.
Panic briefly erupted inside the ballroom as Secret Service agents rushed in following the gunfire, prompting guests to take cover. One officer was reportedly shot at close range but survived after his protective vest absorbed the impact.
The incident has renewed scrutiny of security arrangements at major public events attended by the president. Trump also questioned the suitability of the venue, describing it as not particularly secure.
The Washington Hilton has historical significance as the site of the Attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan, where former US President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.
This latest episode adds to a series of threats against Trump, including a 2024 rally shooting in Pennsylvania and another foiled attempt at a golf course in Florida.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as the suspect is expected to appear in court.
