The Federal Government has rolled out an ambitious plan to transform Nigeria’s road network into “smart highways” equipped with CCTV surveillance, solar-powered street lighting, and modern infrastructure to boost safety, security, and economic growth.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed that the government has approved a N150bn extension of the Bodo-Bonny Road in Rivers State under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement.
According to him, the project will be built with reinforced concrete technology designed to last between 50 and 100 years, significantly reducing maintenance costs.
Beyond road construction, the initiative includes monitoring centres for rapid emergency response, truck parks to ease congestion, rest areas for travelers, and landscaping to improve the environment.
The government says the plan reflects a shift toward durable, tech-driven infrastructure that supports businesses and enhances quality of life.
